So you wanna be in pictures? I’m in the process of writing a new webseries and I’m looking for people to help fill out the cast and crew. We need everything from supporting cast and extras to location scouts and tech people on the production side. Interested? Curious? Bored? So i was talking to a friend yesterday about various things and the conversation eventually swung around to football (which it seems to always do) and we started talking about Mike Singletary. If the name doesn’t ring a bell he’s the interim coach for the San Francisco 49ers. If that name doesn’t ring a bell that’s okay, it’s not relevant to the story.
Anyway, we managed to get to discussing the procedure the team (49ers) would have to go through to make Mike the official head coach. See, in professional football, if a coach gets fired before a team they have to interview at least 1 minority for the position. It’s called the Rooney Rule. It’s retarded. Mostly because the assholes doing the hiring are still prejudice and can’t see past the nose on their face.
I said as much to my friend and made the comment that if they were to interview another friend, Peter, it would only be because he was black to fill a quota and it wasn’t a fair assessment of his ability to fill the role (assuming for the sake of argument he was qualified). My friend corrected me saying that I should call him an African-American, not black.
Mistake number one.
I immediately went into a tirade (quietly) about how stupid and ultimately self-defeating the entire PC thing is. One point I made that I really like was that if they want to be treated equally then they need to stop pointing out how different they are. More on that another time.
Then my friend pointed out that they preferred to be called African-American (and yes, you could hear the hyphen) as opposed to black. It (air quotes from me) ’sounded better’.
Mistake number two.
Look, Pete’s my best friend. He’s an occasional idiot and there are days I want to slap the crap out of him and I’m sure there are days he wants to do the same to me. He’s fun, lively, energetic, great personality, smart (starting to sound like a dating service) but most of all HE’S BLACK! He’s not African-American. Dude’s from Trinidad (South America), not freaking Africa. Talk to him and he’ll tell you he’s black.
Just like I’m part Cherokee but hate the term ‘Native American’. I’m technically a native because I was born but so was my wife and she doesn’t have a drop of ‘Native American’ blood in her. So isn’t she native because she was born here? Nope, not according to the PC police. I’m Cherokee. He’s Black. Don’t like it, too bad.
So the point of all this was I got to thinking, what generic terms can we use to differentiate people of different skin tone and ethnic backgrounds. I didn’t say race because there is only one race, Human.
After a while I decided on these, though I’m not 100% happy since they aren’t totally generic.
1. non-white: any person not of anglo-saxon decent.
2. non non-white: any person of
anglo-saxon decent.
Hopefully that to shut a few people up for a while. Now if you’ll excuse me I have to wash my Confederate flag. And yes I own one, I am from the South after all.
(p.s. Before anyone get’s their hair all in a bunch, this was supposed to be taken sarcastically. Those that know me know I hate… no, abhor the politically correct phase the country is in right now. All because someone somewhere might get upset at our words. He’s black. Period. Don’t believe me ask him. )
(p.p.s. And regarding the Confederate Flag… the flag doesn’t represent slavery you idiots. It represent the south in an attempt to rise up and create a new country independant of the North. Slavery was but a single issue among many, many economic ones that caused the Civil War. Get your fucking facts before you start mouthing off. Idiots)
