In passing proposition 8 on Tuesday the citizens of California have managed to do something else has ever done in history and at the same time laid the first brick in the foundation that will eventually become a war. They have managed to unequivocally define the tenant of marriage as a legal statute.
Let’s be clear, it has been a legal statute for a long time but has always been considered a religious commitment. If you don’t believe it’s more legal than religious then consider this; why do you have to go to town/city hall and file a marriage certificate? Why does your spouse get legal benefits?
Were it purely religious thing then anyone and their partner would be able to fin a sympathetic Minisiter or other holy man and get married. They still can but it isn’t recognized by most states and the national governments. Both legal bodies.
Most importantly, think of the last line spoken by the person preciding over the ceremony. More often than not it ends with something to the effect of “…and by the power vested in me by the state of…”. That simply means that the state/town/whatever has given it’s blessing and approval. A legal entity.
What this all basically means is that the religious arguments against same-sex marriages are now moot. They have no place in the discussion any more.
How can you argue that it violates ‘Gods’ law when it has been taken out of religion and placed squarely in the world of human law.
Yes, I realize that there are human laws that already exist that violate ‘Gods’ law, but do you hear anyone raising a voice against them? Nope. And yes, I realize that human law isn’t supposed to superceed ‘Gods’ law, but you will have to differenate between which law you are refering to.
If you want to ‘define’ marriage legally as a ‘legal union between a man and a women’ that’s fine. You go right ahead. However you are eventually going to have to deal the same-sex couples at some point. They will get their time. Just look at the President-Elect to see things are changing.
Ride the wave or get swept under it.
